A jeweller from Greece by the name of Sotirios Voulgaris was the founder of Bvlgari. His name in Italian becomes Soritio Bulgari when translated.
Bulgari started his first jewellery store in his hometown. In 1877 he left for Italy, traveling via Corfu and then to Naples. Seven years after first setting off, he settled in Rome.
This is where Bulgari’s second store was opened, but the first under the name as we know it today. In 1905 the business was further expanded and Sotirio’s two sons, Giorgio and Constantino, helped to opened a new shop; again in Rome. Many rich flocked to the store to buy the sumptuous jewels inlaid into the jewellery which had both Greek and Roman Italian art influences. Today, there are nearly 300 boutiques. In 1984, the grandsons of Sotirio; Paolo and Nicola Bulgari, became chairman and vice-chairman of the company, with nephew Francesco Trapani being named CEO.
The decision to branch out from just producing jewellery was the notion of Trapani in the 1990s. The first sign of this was the release of the Bvlgari perfume line. With Trapani as CEO, Bvlgari became a brand known not just for its gems and jewels, but for everything a luxury brand is associated with, from watches to bags. This year, in March 2011, French group LVMH (whose name comes from their ownership of Louis Vuitton, Moet&Chandon and Hennessy) bought Bvlgari from the family in an all share deal to take complete control and ownership.
LVMH have said they hope to lead Bvlgari forwards as brand, increasing their luxury status as well as sales. The Bvlgari 4045B | BV 4045B is one of the top selling frames in the entire Bvlgari range. These are definitely for the ladies, with a curved take on the rectangular frame giving a soft and gentle feel. There is small jewelled detailing at the temples, making these glasses a real statement item. The most popular colour choice is dark Havana, with contrasting beige arms and a dark brown, almost tortoiseshell style, front. Several different lenses can be fitted into the Bvlgari 4045B | BV 4045B frames, with all these lenses able to be coated.
The thickness of the lens can be changed depending on how you would like the glasses to appear, as well as how strong you would like them to be (the thinnest lenses are the most durable). High prescriptions are recommended the thinner lens, as this will look less bulky then your standard lens. Anti scratch and anti glare coatings can be added to all lenses, and this is a highly recommended option which is basically almost standard now. Other options to suit different lifestyles include dust and water repellence, as well as smudge proofing.
