Bvlgari was started by Sotirios Voulgaris, a jeweler from Epirus, Greece. Translated, his name in Italian becomes Sotirio Bulgari.
Epirus was the site of his first store, being his hometown. He decided to travel to Italy to expand his business. First visiting Corfu and then Naples, before finally staying in Rome in 1884.
This is where Bulgari opened his second store and founded the company.Rome is also the site for the current flagship store, which was opened by Bulgari and his two sons, Giorgio and Constantino, in 1905. The rich from all across Rome and the surrounding provinces would visit the shop to purchase the unique and luxurious jewellery, which was designed with both Roman and Greek influences. New stores opened across the globe during the 1970s; USA, France, Switzerland and Monaco. Today, Bvlgari has more than 290 stores worldwide.
Keeping the business within the family, the current chairmen and CEO are Sotiro’s grandchildren and nephew; Paolo and Nicola Bulgari and Francesco Trapani. Trapani was the brains behind the decision to diversity and produce not only jewellery in the 90s. The first sign of this was the release of the Bvlgari perfume line. With Trapani as CEO, Bvlgari became a brand known not just for it’s gems and jewels, but for everything a luxury brand is associated with, from clothing to accessories.
In early 2011, the French group behind Louis Vuitton and Moet champagne, LVMH, bought the 50.6% controlling share of Bvlgari from the family. The Bvlgari 4040 | BV 4040 model of glasses is one of the bestsellers in the Bvlgari range. The traditional narrow, rectangular shape is given a feminine edge with soft curves and thicker sides. The frame comes in a variety of colours, including traditional black, and the unconventional but most popular Havana brown with sky blue arms. Several lenses can be fitted into the Bvlgari BV4040 frames, all of which can be coated to different effects.
Different thicknesses can be created without compromising on quality. However, generally the thinner the lens, the stronger it is. People with high prescriptions who care about how their glasses look are recommended to go for a thinner lens, as they can otherwise look obviously thick and bulky. Although available without, anti-glare and anti-scratch coatings are recommended for everyone who wears any prescription of glasses. Other options to suit different lifestyles include dust and water repellence, as well as smudge proofing.
