Ran Ban has been around for over 75 years. The company was first created by Bausch & Lomb in 1937. The company launched the first Wayfarer in the 1950’s; the new shape radicalised the world of eyewear.

By the early 1990’s, the wayfarer style was on the verge of being discontinued as it was no longer in demand. People grew out of boxy frames and were after wrap-around styles and over sized (bug-eye) styles. Bigger was better.

The Ray Ban Wayfarer Today
The Wayfarer had a 'makeover design' in the early millennium which brought back its popularity. Since then, Ray Ban Wayfarer has become one of the bestselling eyewear models worldwide.

Many musicians and celebrities are in love with Ray Ban Wayfarers; from Katy Perry and Bruno Mars, to Chloe Sevigny and Nicole Richie. Below are the four main Ray Ban Wayfarer collections:

Original Wayfarer
This model has the classic wayfarer shape. The frame is squared which was unheard of in the 50’s. The outer edge of the model resembles the tail fin of a Cadillac automobile.

Folding Wayfarer
Similar to the Original Wayfarer. These sunglasses have an extra set of hinges midway down the temples and at the nose bridge which enables you to neatly fold away your frames. The Folding Wayfarer can be stored in your pockets as they fold to the size of the lenses. So compact, they're perfect for those who want their sunglasses 'on-the-go'.

Wayfarer II
The Wayfarer II has the look of the browline style; this was also a classic 1950’s style staple that became popular the same time as the wayfarer style. It’s frame shape is slightly less squared than the Original Wayfarer. The top rim of the frame is colourful and striped whilst the bottom half is a block colour.

New Wayfarer
The New Wayfarer frame is smaller and more rectangle/oval than squared. If your face shape is too angular, you will suit the New Wayfarer. If you have very small face, the New Wayfarer may provide you with a better fit.
