What Are Polarized Sunglasses?

What Are Polarized Sunglasses?

There is much talk about the benefits of wearing polarized sunglasses but do you actually know what they are or what they do?

This short post will briefly explain what are polarized sunglasses and why they are a great investment, especially for those who are constantly outdoors.

What Are Polarized Sunglasses?

Polarized sunglasses blocks out the horizontal glare and haze from flat surfaces such as roads, desktops and tables, and water. A special film is applied to the lenses to make them polarized. When the light hits the lenses, the reflective light is filtered which eliminates the visible glare.

Who Benefits From Them?

If you are very sports-active or love the outdoors, these sunglasses should be a key investment for you. If you love to fish, the sunglasses will block out all of the reflection on the surface of the water and you'll be able to see your fish clearly through the water.

What Are Polarized Sunglasses?Even if you are not an outdoors person you can still benefit from polarized eyewear.

What Are Polarized Sunglasses?Do you drive? Does the reflection of the sun on the roads affect your vision? Do you find it difficult to see on wet roads? If the answer is yes to either one of these questions then you should consider polarised eyewear.

The images you can see on the right show you how the road looks with non-polarised eyewear and polarised eyewear. You can see that the image with polarised sunglasses has blocked the harsh light that was reflected on the road.

The only disadvantage to polarised sunglasses is that they will only block out horizontal glare so you won't receive universal protection from reflective light. If you tilt your head at a certain angle you will notice that your lenses are not filtering the glare.

Additional Sun Coatings

Polarised lenses only block out glare visible from the front of the lens however the rear-side of your sunglasses are not protection from this. This means that even with your polarised eyewear, you can still experience glare from behind you so make sure you opt for sun coatings. Sun coatings are applied to the back-side of the lenses and will reduce glare from behind the eyes.
