    Mario and Martino Prada started a small leather goods business in 1913 in Milan, Italy. They sold English steamer trunks and ladies handbags. The shop was called Fratelli Prada, or the Prada brothers in English.

    Mario prevented female family members from entering the business as he didn’t see it as a suitable environment for women. Eventually though, when the time came to hand down the business, his son had no interest so it was his daughter, Luisa, who took over. She ran the business successfully for nearly 20 years and saw a small growth. In 1978 her daughter, Miuccia (who had trained as a mime) took over.

    Miuccia, despite not having relevant qualifications had fantastic fashion sense and a natural flair. She met businessman Patrizio Bertolli shortly before she took over Prada, and made him business manager when she became the head of the company.
