Stella McCartney unveils a new sustainable approach to her eyewear collection. 

“As a signatory of ‘The New Plastics Global Commitment’, launched by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, we have pledged to eliminate all unnecessary and problematic plastics by 2025. By this deadline, we are also committed to ensuring that 100% of plastic can be easily and safely reused, recycled or composted, circulating the plastic produced and making it into new packaging or products.”

Stella McCartney is known worldwide for her sustainable, ethical and vegan fashion brand. As a lifelong vegetarian Stella McCartney does not use fur or leather materials in her designs, committed to operating a sustainable, modern business. Stella McCartney was founded in 2001 as she landed a joint venture with the Gucci Group after becoming head designer for fashion brand Chloe, shortly after leaving Central St.Martins with a degree in Fashion Design.

Like her mother, Stella was brought up as a vegetarian and animal rights activist. This lifestyle is what led Stella to create a fashion brand which pushes the fashion industries boundaries by designing and creating luxurious products that are not only desirable but sustainable and cruelty-free. Stella McCartney is paving the way to define the future of fashion, not only from using renewable resources but pioneering alternative materials, utilising innovative technologies and pushing towards circularity, protecting endangered and ancient forests and measuring our impact with groundbreaking tools. 

Stella McCartney Eyewear collections are all in partnership with Kering Eyewear which uses the most advanced technology and renewable raw materials such as bio-acetate which is phthalate-free and wood pulp fibres, making her glasses biodegradable. 

Bio-Acetate

Bio-acetate is a more natural version of acetate which is commonly used in eyewear.  The difference between standard acetate and bio-acetate is that standard acetate plasticizer (DEP) is petroleum in origin, however, bio-acetate is a combination of two components –  cellulose acetate (wood) and plasticizer which is derived from the esters of citric acid. Consequently providing natural and renewable alternatives. Other sources used are fibres made from seeds (cotton) and wood (conifers and broadleaves). The feel of Bio-Acetate is perfect for the Stella McCartney brand as it has a luxurious aesthetic and touch.

The Autumn/Winter 2019 Stella McCartney Eyewear collection is a combination of both optical and sun styles. The AW19 range has been inspired by signature design prints and details which match the same design concept as the ready to wear collection. Within this collection, there are plenty of innovative silhouettes to complement the eyewear range offering a playful yet classic styling. Effortlessly stand out in Black and Havana angular shapes or be bold in sunset ombres and elegant hues. 

The Stella Logo has been redesigned for the 2019 collection to include two new silhouettes, both showcasing a laser-detailed logo print across the entire frame and lens, creating a statement signature style. With Stella McCartney the frames come in feminine butterfly, vintage cat-eye shapes, available in olive green, purple, blue and pink. The eyewear collection has also grown their uni-sex range with five new additions added in modern, versatile silhouettes. 

Bold colour and playfulness are two themes which have been injected into the Kids collection. The back to school range also offers new classic optical shapes in a range of vivid shades, cherry, red, blue and orange. Also, all made from ethical, sustainable materials.
